The rain has never stop since last Friday, and some areas in Kuching were flooded. It's sad to know this, since few thousands people are affected and with some flooded roads, most people can't go back to their houses because of that.

First week of 2009
A new year, a new start
I already passed the date to initiate my project, and it's kinda upset me and is a really bad news to start my new year. Never mind, still troubleshooting so that can start the project as soon as possible.
This year will be a packed year for me, and everything is planned before 2008 ended. Hopefully can achieve one by one before the dateline.
A good news to share is the microplate reader, washer and the shaking incubator has finally came to my workplace in hospital. Just can't believe, such a small space in this hospital so called lab can fit in these instruments. Thanks to the technicians who helped to install them.
lol. By the way, i just realized i have no space for me to do the bench work with all these instruments compacted together in a small room.

2008 and 2009
2008 is a special year for most people, including me. After today, 2008 will be into a history. People will only know the past events that happened in 2008 through a history book. From the environment, till the politic, social, and economic. This 2008 has bring up so many unpleasant memories for us if we look back before welcome a new 2009.
It's a year of:
1. Massive natural disasters (Sichuan Earthquake, Myanmar Cyclone, China snow storms)
2. The most successful ever Olympic game in Beijing, China
3. Poisonous milk powder made in China problem
4. Over-rise of oil price causes the rise of inflation rate
5. United States presidential candidate election - Barack Obama becomes the first Black in US won the election
6. Terrorist attack in Mumbai, India
7. Bangkok airport protest
8. The worse ever Economic crisis starts, which affect all over the World and to be continued in 2009
9. The shock and awe shoe throwing to George Bush event
10. The bom attack of Gaza by Israel after Christmas
11. The arrest of ex-taiwan president who involved in corruption charges
It's also a year which I am:
1. Graduated from University
2. Found a job in Kuching, which will bond me in same company in next 5 years
3. Continue to study as a Master student
4. Conquerred the Mt. Kinabalu in Sabah
5. and Started to think about the future in terms of marriage, family matter, career etc.
Recall back, it's a year which i think i learn alot from what i see in these influential past events. Both the bad and good side of a human being.
Though many would say 2009 will be another tough year, and maybe even worse than 2008. I believe in a new year, we should have a new dream and be prepared for all the challenges
Wish all of us Happy New Year 2009. =)

Thank God It's Christmas
I am in a mood of Christmas, and will be officially off for a week of Christmas and New Year holidays start from 24th December. God bless me i have a great Christmas holidays ever. =)
More works to do after New Year, and this will be the only rest time for me to enjoy what i would like to do.
The windy rainy day outside and i just feel so cozy to stay in office, listening to my favorite Christmas songs (also to prepare myself for caroling tonight) while reading up the journals.
Wow, it's never felt so good and only if it's near to Christmas time
Hope i can get what i want for my Christmas present. "p

Replied email
I received some replies from few researchers from NIH past few days, after i asked for their suggestion since i am stucked in my protocol again. The reason why i stuck in my initial proposed protocol is due to lack of facilities/fundings and profesional guidance. I am not sure if there is true or just merely my own feeling, i feel those who really commit themselves to research in Malaysia will have many obstancles, from the funding and the knowledge. We seem lack of training and hard to find a person to really give us a useful advise if we have the problem.
For example, some equipments have been used widely in overseas, while Malaysia still has no market for it. The researchers there willing to take up any question, and start up a study to answer their problem. While the local researchers more towards on economical outcome (to earn money or to get publication), sometimes these people tend to forget about the quality of specimen in every project, which will eventually affect the result. Btw, it's hard to start to work on other specimen besides of cancer cells (for immunology genetic studies), since other disease isn't been paid attention yet. And, if apply for grant, the big people will be more interest if you said this study is the first one in the region, or blah blah blah.
For me, start a pilot study with no previous literature is harder than to further research on a study. This takes time for experiments and also means more money to be wasted with no results at the end. But i believe, this will help to understand alot during experimentation.
Considering my situation here stated in my email, the NIH researcher thought it's a good topic to bring up for a discussion in their coming forum meeting. They also thought that it may not be worked if i use my proposed approach, but it's good to have a try in a small pilot study. So, i am happy they give such an encouragement, much more better with a reply of "Good Luck" with no solution at all. Coz, i think all the success is happens becoz you put the effort, not becoz you're lucky.

Bad mood
I started off with a bad mood in this morning, after having an unpleasant argument with my Dad. Grrgh~~ I don't like argument, i don't like, i don't like and i don't want to be the first one to surrender, i deserved for my own right lah!

Bioanalyzer 2100
I had a chance to follow a KL team to attend a workshop in UNIMAS, basically they wanted to introduce a technology called Lab-on-Chip product, which is Bioanalyzer 2100 from Agilent.
This Bioanalyzer 2100 is a small machine, less than 10 Kg, is able to automate sizing and quantitation of DNA fragments, measure RNA quality, do protein analysis as well as cell counting. With this robust machine alone, a researcher can save cost and time, and spend more time on interpretation of results. It can replace the traditional agorose gel electrophoresis to quantitate the DNA fragment, do genotyping, need not to do SDS-PAGE, perform RFLP, pool samples for mutation detection and perform flow cytometry assays.
Any of these application, all you need is just to prepare your sample, and collect your data within 30 to 40 minutes. It's volatile, efficient, robust and user-friendly. This technology transform the traditional agarose gel into a gel matrix chip, which can accomodate about 12 samples. It needs only as low as 1 ul samples to get the analysis done. It even designed in such a way that to avoid cross-contamination between samples. *Different uses (DNA/RNA/Protein/Cell) needs different types of chips, labeled in different colors.
The exciting part will be on the uses of its software, it is designed in a way that depends on needs of users to interpret the same data differently. The technology is more sensitive that even we assume it's a smear band from an agorose gel, which can actually belongs to more tiny and close bands. This technology is thus more accurate.
The chips are come together with their reagents in a kit, which one kit has about 25 chips (1 chip for 12 samples) can used to run for 300 samples. Approximately, with 1 chip costs about RM12, you can calculate how much is per kit.
